Honestly, I kind-of agree. Albeit with some serious asterisks attached.
Open-world PvP is so, soooo often done poorly in this genre, with raw stats and gear typically smothering any displays of skill by design, in service towards making the weightiest whales feel important (at the expense of everyone else). This imbalance absolutely plagued KMMOs in particular, from Lineage II all the way to Archeage and beyond.
But in the rare instances I recall enjoying PvP of this style, it always took place during the leveling process with others also leveling in the same range as me.
When things are (relatively) evenly matched, and you actually have a chance at winning, it's pretty fun being shaken out of the doldrums of bog-standard questing or semi-mindless grinding and suddenly forced to bring your A-Game against someone getting the drop on you. Plus, small skirmishes turning into full-blown battles of honor between Guilds made for some incredible nights, as you described.
Would imagine that sort of relative gear/level balance went away pretty quickly after the majority of the population for TERA resided at the level cap, however. Definitely heard horror stories of bored 60-cap players camping Lumbertown, and ruthlessly killing any hapless newbloods who had the gall to want to play the game.
Sure, it was practically PvP KMMO tradition to be completely helpless against players you had zero chance of surviving against, virtually unable to play the game for several hours at a time through no fault of your own, but that sure as hell didn't mean it was any fun.
Have to wonder what the player count disparity between PvE and PvP servers ended up being in the end. Guessing the former outweighed the latter by quite a bit before long.
