>“I think you sound crazy.” You tell Bronte. “As if the heat of the desert has absolutely cooked your brain. But…I suppose I believe you. You’ve been here longer than I have. And your story sort of matches up with what that lunatic Marek had told me. Still, history lessons aside, what’s this have to do with the present day? I don’t see very many dragons flying around. And these Agarthans have just been sitting around in the desert keeping themselves isolated from the rest of the world, no? Then what’s the big deal? What do you mean by the end of Morfis?”

“This room is magically sealed. Any words we speak will not reach the outside. Tristain…what I am about to tell you is of the utmost importance and secrecy.” Bronte says. The atmosphere in the room grows tense as your cousin leans forward, her gaze piercing right through you. “In all of Morfis, I am the only one alive who knows this truth. You must swear to not reveal what I say to another soul. Promise me. And show me your hands as you do so. I already know all your tricks.”

>“I swear.” You say, holding your hands outright so that Bronte could see you were not crossing your fingers.

“Princess Yulia…” Bronte whispers. “Is unable to use magic.”

>“What?” You chuckle inadvertently. “The princess of the Sorcerer Kingdom can’t use sorcery?”

Bronte shakes her head. “She is the first descendant of the Sorcerer King in over a thousand years who cannot. It is not unheard of for magical talent to skip a generation. There are many plain examples of it back home. However, something like that happening here has deeper consequences. Morfis is a magocracy, and one that reveres the Sorcerer King and his family as their rightful rulers. If the people ever found out that Yulia was unable to use magic, they would view it as the end of the Sorcerer King’s dynasty. The family would fall out of favor. At that point, the leadership of Morfis would fall to the Royal Sages. It is for that reason Yulia is kept out of sight, and why we need a new ruler that can actually fight back.”

>“Is that the reason for the contest? But what’s your problem with the Sages taking over?”

“Because the Sages wish to open Tartarus.” Bronte says. “And that is where the end of the world comes into play.”

>“That mausoleum right? Seems everyone wants to open it, but no one knows what’s inside. Alvin seems to think it’s a place of creation, while the cult seems to think opening it will destroy Morfis outright.”

“Of the two, the cult is probably closer to the truth.” Bronte says. “Tell me, do you remember learning about the Valleys of Torment back in school?”

>“Ailell and Merceus, right?” The Valleys of Torment were the two most hellish places in Fodlan. They were giant craters where no life survived, said to be created after humans provoked the wrath of the Goddess.
