>kicking the ball in NATO's court
What ball? The ball of how to destroy Iran's nuclear sites now that Russia has intervened?
Amusingly enough there actually IS historic precedent of this, but the circumstances for this in a confusingly named "War of Attrition" fought in the 60s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_Attrition
tl;dr - Egypt's air defense was absolutely broken by Israel and the kikes were bombing Cairo at will. Egypt appealed to the Soviet Union for help and SU agreed sending their AD and fighter jets to the region. SU suffered notable losses, but were able to balance the playing field and slowly cut off Israel's access to Egyptian airspace.
But the circumstances around Russia's entrance were notably different. Again, I see no benefit for them to interfere so directly in Iran (especially now that the bombing is supposed to be over).
"Just to piss off the other guy" usuallly comes back to bite you in the ass in geopolitics.
