Ichigo's sword wasn't a true zanpakuto. Ichigo's sword was never in permanent Shikai state. Ichigo's sword never gave him a special power for Shikai.
The only time Ichigo got a genuine shinigami sword and obtained new powers when his sword changed was when he got a sword from Nimaiya and activated HoS. EoS Ichigo is the only one using a true shinigami zanpakuto and thus the only one using a true Shikai and true Bankai.
