Anon, what's wrong with your memory? NES-SNES Nintendo was difficult, but two major contributing factors to the difficulty back then were (1) you being inexperienced with video games and working things out for the first time, and (2) a lack of modern gaming sensibilities.
N64 and GC-era Nintendo was also braindead easy. Miyamoto has categorically stated that he thinks gamers dislike difficult games. Nintendo's games have started to become slightly more difficult and challenging again since younger developers and staff at Nintendo have taken the reigns.
