They had one of those at ESA or GDQ, a Metroidvania and it had advanced lighting like you would have, because that's easy to do in modern 2D engines, but the main character was like 8 pixels, looked like fuckin Pitfall Harry. I had no idea what style they were trying to emulate other than "uh....like...old and shit". And probably listed Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night as influences, as though those games don't have highly detailed sprites with quality animation that still looks pleasing to the eye now.
