The ending is already there at the end of Chapterhouse. When FH self insert himself with his wife in a super futuristic setup (in Dune universe) looking back the archives of the Dune story that's the proof that humanity achieved the Golden Path (and live on forever beyond humanity's prophetic destruction). Its a hard grasp with a love or hate it twist approach but it all make sens once you put it together.
