Malting grains to turn starch into sugar has been done in Europe for thousands of years. You can do the same thing with barley and that's how beer is made.

Corn syrup being worse for you than sugar just felt like a lot of confusion with people not knowing what it is and companies willing to provide whatever people wanted even if it was replacing one type of sugar with another similar sugar that doesn't really change anything overall. There isn't much of a difference between HFCS and cane sugar.
