I ran a session of Mothership and I really think that the system is kind of awful. Even ignoring the gay shit and Artpunk cringe (0E art was mostly trash and it's better in 1E. I also removed all of the pronoun/trans/commie garbage from the PDFs) it feels like most of the game is really shallow. Even little things like ammo consumption. Smart Gun has 15 listed for ammo, revolver has 5. Is that the total magazine size? The amount of ammo consumed by one attack? The answers, if you ask Reddit:
>dunno lol
>my group doesn't track ammo
>I use usage die
>I bought these 3d printed bullet counters on Etsy!
It just doesn't feel like a game designed for anything more than the most casual of groups, and a stage for module writers to show off how they can insert their own little shitdick political virtue signals (seriously, look at the random item search table in Dead Planet. The corpse of Lenin is included in it.)
It's a shame, because despite the culture war crap, I still backed the Kickstarter and was excited to see how the game would improve upon 0E but it's overall a very low effort product. I would love to have an easy to run, do-it-all sci-fi horror system on standby but the shortcomings of the game are enough that the amount of house rules required to run the game are approaching home brew status. Despite this, my group had fun with the one intermission session we played of it and we'll likely run at least one more to finish off the scenario.
I have the Alien RPG but have never run it. I'll probably give that a shot next time. What else exists for good sci-fi horror?
(Picrel, I guess? It was the first horrific sci-fi thing I found saved on my phone)
