I’ve been on the internet for a long time, in online spaces where people from all over the world interact. Years ago, when I told people I was from India, the reaction was mostly neutral or positive, like, “Oh,yeah, the land of spices, yoga, Bollywood!” or some variation of Eat, Pray, Love romanticization. Sure, there was some ignorance, some stereotypes, but it wasn’t outright hostile.
Now, I say I’m from India, and people either hurl slurs at me. The shift has been stark and disturbing.
Don’t even get me started on the countless accounts on Instagram focused solely on spreading vitriol against Indians. Literally highlighting the lowest of our population as a reflection of us as a whole.
Not sure where did it went wrong?.
