You are not obligated to try but Buddhists believe that it's worth trying, "the noble struggle", because life is suffering, even being rich/beautiful/famous is essentially suffering because it's not sustainable, it's ephemeral and once it's gone you will suffer even more than you would if you never had experienced it in the first place so the true nature of all that is nothing but suffering.
