Part of the problem with having a discussion with right-wingers is that they are inherently anti-intellectual. They do not understand the larger conversation that is taking place, and they fall for simplistic worldviews that fit their childish view of how political and social power is exercised.
For example, an intelligent person would infer that the discussion that I was having was a grander position about how the reduction of poverty alleviates crime, whereas the right-winger implies that's nonsense and that to get rid of crime is to be tough on security. Neither of this needs to be said, it simply needs to be implied in the discussion, because my assumption is that the person I'm speaking to can infer information about the grander conversation. Leftists lower poverty, and that lowers crime, right-wingers tackle the symptom, not the cause.
