To start, /a/ had arguably the 'deepest' community of any board on 4chan, but that was born out of /a/ being frequented by people active in actual anime communities. They weren't limited solely to /a/, like how much of /v/ is people who can't fit in anywhere else, a lot of guys you would see on /a/ in the 00s and 10s were guys you could find in blogging circles, in subgroups, on various forums and newsgroups, etc.
So, when 4chan started going downhill in 2014/15, that was just another motion that indicated it was time to leave. You can't really show this anymore, but there is a reason the original 8/a/ was pretty popular and active, and also why a lot of anime specific imageboards cropped up in the 2010s. A lot of people just left altogether, what with moderation changing, weird moderation changes happening on /a/, and eventually moot himself leaving, but a lot of people still frequented those spots.
8ch dying killed that though. And the people who used /a/ just kept moving on, because the people who used /a/ weren't exclusively on imageboards.
If you want, you can go check and see a pretty big decline from 2013 to 2014, and then an absurdly steep decline into 2015, and from there /a/ just kept going down.
/a/ got revived in 2020, but that was through the popularity of /dbs/ outside of /a/ reaching a peak alongside the Bleach / Naruto storytimes drawing in a lot of people, which has led to /a/'s current state- wannabe /dbs/ generals and storytime spam.
