it's not as simple as "recession = bad". any country can avoid a recession basically indefinitely. to loop back to the nazi germany example, they kept juicing up the economy to keep up the war effort while their people were actively starving, up until the very end. so it's not really a good indication of whether the people in a country are doing well.

recessions are a necessary part of a functioning economy. you want a recession every now and then to make sure shitty businesses die off. when you don't have a recession for a long time, you end up with US economy circa 2025, where you have a bunch of overvalued zombie companies that provide very little of real value while sucking up resources and labor like crazy, which makes everyone in the country poorer in terms of real, tangible wealth.
