Exactly. Pétain did his job extremely competently in 1917-1918, reestablishing troop rotations, improving wages, stopping dumb bayonet charges. He was considered a hero because he adapted the army to the conditions of the battlefield. If he had stopped there, or had kept doing his job as a soldier, he would still be remembered as a hero.
