Abstract Art was basically just expressionism taken to 11, reducing its forms down to an astract (hence the name) design language. Where I think the two differ most is in their respective contexts. Abstract Art like I said closely follows design language, you would typically find expressionist art in an art gallery, but abstract art you would instead find in public spaces like parks or train stations or hospital waiting rooms or hotel lobbies, that would fill what would otherwise be blank space. Abstract art basically meant to change or influence the vibe or feeling of a given space without having to deal with concrete subject.
