Back when radios were too expensive to hand out to just any one and the signals were weak and anything could interfere with them . Also are the "Bad parts of the job" like walking the fence line with only a flash light have been replaced with CCTV - And the White Man would " Just have to handle it himself " -- women could not do those jobs and they paid less , they did not want them.
Note what jobs women take in Public service -- Sewer worker are all men -- the soft sit on your ass jobs are all women.
