The problem with european footy is that the big teams only play "real" matches against teams of comparable calliber every once in a while, only 25% of the teams in each league offer any real (and consistent) threat to the top 2 or 3 teams. So they only play like 20 games with real stakes in the entire year (considering they reach the knockout stage of UCL). In Brazil and Argentina there is disparity between teams but nothing like that, so the teams are used to give everything in most games.
