A lot of his stories are generally about either societal collapse or mankind's hubris being thrown in his face. A lot of Lovecraft's protagonists are everyday guys or scholars, depending on the purpose of the story. You also have to remember that a good portion of Lovecraftian works function kind of like detective noires, but with the culprit being much more horrific.
