Heh. Many resisted.
Narcissistic bragging has a certain increased effectiveness on the internet. Also, he was immediately ridiculous. Being openly ridiculous projects confidence and renders you invulnerable to being called out as ridiculous.
Then he'd admit to "flaws" like raging at his wife when he didn't mean to. Which reportedly gave a sense of vulnerable sincerity.
Apparently, admitting to traits that others find negative while bragging about things that aren't true *seems* more honest than talking about yourself honestly and not having anything terrible to reveal.

tl;dr: confidence
And when ones mixes obvious exaggerations in with reasonable claims, it makes the claims seem true. Even if it's bullshit all the way down.

All it took was reading enough of his posts to realize that he contradicted his own opinions most of the time.

This is all from my near-eidedic memory. I haven't thought much about this until I was recently accused of being him.
