Key word "navigatable". Aside from the Nile, where an ancient civilization did form, all the other rives in Africa are not navigatable because of yearly weather patterns or steep drops/climbs in elevation. They just weren't usable. Same with ports. Natural, coastal harbors were not common along much of the African coast. There's most coastline along the eastern seaboard of American than all of Africa. Most of Africa's coast is straight and unusable for seafaring.
