SBU Says It 'Eliminated' Killers of Slain Colonel in Kyiv
Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) announced on Sunday that it had "eliminated" a male and female operative team, directed by Russia's FSB, who were responsible for the assassination of an SBU colonel in Kyiv.
The head of the SBU, Lieutenant General Vasyl Malyuk, personally oversaw the counterintelligence operation that located the suspects. According to an official SBU statement, the slain officer was Colonel Ivan Voronych, who was killed on Thursday, July 10.
"An agent-combat group of the Russian FSB was sent to Ukraine in advance and, three days ago, committed the murder of an SBU officer, our brother-in-arms Colonel Ivan Voronych," Malyuk stated.
The SBU reported that the assassins resisted arrest and were killed in an ensuing firefight."As a result of covert search and active counterintelligence measures, the enemy's den was discovered. During the arrest, they began to resist; there was a firefight, so the scoundrels were eliminated," Malyuk added.
Investigators allege the team's handler ordered them to surveil the colonel, establishing his daily schedule and travel routes before providing them with the location of a stashed pistol equipped with a suppressor. After carrying out the assassination, the killers attempted to hide in the Kyiv region but were located by the SBU and National Police forces.
