Yes they've been doing the same tricks for thousands of years, and that includes controlling politicians by various means. Have you heard of Esther? They do different forms of intrigue in different ages. And maybe in the past hierarchies would be different such that control of a central government would be less necessary. For example they might control a religion or a powerful minority group. But currently the control of the US government is very significant.
