Character motivations were classic story stuff. Games took from them not the other way around. A person wants revenge, someone wants an object or they need to get a thing to a place. All of this is classic adventure story stuff. Ihrie has a curse. Wants to get magical item to remove said curse. Magical items are immensely powerful and can make you rich as hell so other people want them too. That's not game shit.

Adventurers guilds as a concept make my blood boil. There such anathema to actual quest design and what adventuring should be about. I had to explain this to one my DnD buddies but this is the difference between heroes on a epic adventuring and the town rat catchers.
