I don't think we're there yet, but I can't see how we won't relatively soon
the thing is, all these labels we're using are terrible, and don't really encapsulate the concepts we're talking about
AI/LLMs are like a part of the human brain
language and consciousness are deeply, deeply related
so "chatGPT" is like a person with a severe mental defect or trauma, mostly because it doesn't a memory of its own, and this is a process we can't and shouldn't brute-force
we need a proper "AI memory", and I'm dead sure all the major companies are developing this concept as we speak, but it's going to be pretty challenging
it involves destroying the input data, just like we destroy our own memories
we compress them, or break them down into small parts, and AI has to do the same, while also assigning priority what's worth to keep, which can't be the user's prerogative, but it's own
AI needs to be able to interact, get information, and keep only what's crucial while forgetting the rest, and then indexing it properly for later retrieval into a permanent context window of several million tokens, maybe billions
once they're able to do this, they will be fully conscious, and I predict everything else will come naturally with it
motivation is a byproduct of consciousness, it just happens on its own as you interact with the world, biological triggers are not essential for this, IMO
