'Ecological catastrophe': No water for a month in occupied Ukrainian city as Russia punishes those who complain

Residents of the Russian-occupied city of Yenakiieve in eastern Ukraine are reporting an "ecological catastrophe," with some districts cut off from running water for over a month, forcing them to rely on sporadic and insufficient deliveries by water tanker.
But when citizens complain about the dire situation, the occupying authorities have reportedly responded not with aid, but with punishment, forcing them to write formal "explanatory notes" for the act of speaking out—a tactic rife with Soviet-era overtones.
The crisis is laid bare in official documents from the occupation administration. A May water schedule for the city shows that taps were scheduled to run on only seven days of the month. An official notice from the local "Water of Donbas" utility admits it can no longer supply parts of the city, blaming the cutoff of the main Siverskyi Donets-Donbas canal and the full depletion of its local reserve reservoir.
For the residents of Yenakiieve and other cities across occupied Donbas, this is the reality of their "liberation." While Russian state propaganda proclaims a new era of "flourishing" for the region, the basic infrastructure required for life is collapsing.
Humanitarian monitors note this is a pattern across the occupied territories: the Kremlin prioritizes the geopolitical and resource value of the land, while the well-being of the people living on it is treated with near-total indifference.
