I know enough to understand quite a bit of what they're saying by ear, and plenty of it if it's standard conversation. You don't need to understand the language to get the inflection and emotion conveyed, or to appreciate the expert voice work and the beautiful voices, however.
Anybody that watches subtitled anime can pick it up to some extend after some years.
