NATO agreed to increase defense spending to 5% of participant countries' GDP by 2035.

NATO member states agreed to increase defense spending due to "the long-term threat posed by Russia to Euro-Atlantic security and the persistent threat of terrorism."

The joint declaration states that Allies will allocate at least 3.5% of GDP annually "to resource core defense requirements" and 1.5% to protect critical infrastructure, ensure civil preparedness, unleash innovation, and strengthen the defense industrial base.''

"Allies reaffirm their enduring sovereign commitments to provide support to Ukraine, whose security contributes to ours, and, to this end, will include direct contributions towards Ukraine's defense and its defense industry when calculating Allies' defense spending," the declaration states.

NATO countries also reaffirmed their "ironclad commitment to collective defense" enshrined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty.
