Mamdani was born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda, the only child of filmmaker Mira Nair and postcolonialism academic Mahmood Mamdani.[11][12]
Mamdani then attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where he co-founded the school's chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine. He graduated in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in African studies.[24][25]
