>If I spent months learning about their hopes, dreams and relationships, I would start having a problem watching drone drop videos. So why would I want to?

That's why I said not everyone is made equal, in your shoes I would want to watch those videos even more SPECIFICALLY because I knew them on a personal level, it would bring a level of relatability and empathy for their plight that is simply not possible when they are just literal whos from a continent away (well in my case the Ukros are close, like we're neighbours close) but since it's real life there would be limits, I could watch them die just fine so long as the footage wasn't agonizing prolonged detailed gore (so think any cartel execution) cause by that point it serves no purpose beyond morbid curiosity (that I've had enough of as a kid)

The gist of it is that I'm not running away from reality, I try to skirt it as much as possible and cheat out the system as much as possible (but without hurting others) like not being a wagie (for one) but what you describe is akin to closing your eyes at the first sight of discomfort, which is exactly what my friend does and that's exactly why I said you remind me of him. I guess we're just different on a philosophical level.

>depending on whether you feel sad or glad when you see the characters suffer

It's directly proportional to what I am seeing and how convincing it is, how much does the character in question deserve it etc. In David's case I didn't feel much during most of his edgerunning because he did this to himself and he knew very well what he was getting into, apart from his mom dying there was nothing to feel sorry for cause he had it coming. Maine dying and his shellshocking as a result is also something worth mentioning but also directly tied to "he had it coming".
