Kinda depends on how far that qualifies as Magecraft. Before Extella and FGO there is a vague amount of necessary knowledge there. Not even in magic as Archimedes and other mathematicians are noted to qualify.
The way I see, if he doesn't have that even if he was a Caster those abilities would be wasted cause the container would cripple him from most of the physical advantages and he wouldn't have magical ones to compensate

Cu is an interesting point while Caster has boons from Odin we see his abilities in magic are amped compared to Lancer and back up his claims of qualifying for Caster. Furthermore he mostly fights with a mix of deceit and firepower
