The point is that if you tolerate racism, sexism, fascism, etc. it will only grow and fester and then will destroy those who allowed it to continue to exist.
Maintaining freedom requires purging of elements which are hostile to it, and maintaining tolerance likewise requires purging society of inherently intolerant ideologies which desire the oppression or extermination of different groups of people.
