Ross Bagdasarian only really made the whole Chipmunks franchise to sell music (pop tunes of the time, pitched up under parody, to skirt legal). Then his Kid (Jr.) carried it into the 80's as a cash cow. So I mean if you have Merch to sell and can make a cartoon around it. Go for it.
Otherwise, it seems to have strayed a bit from it's roots, thematically.
