Yeah that's the same thing as constantly putting news about layoffs in the news cycle, makes people anxious and aware of their reliance on their employer. They've been doing that for decades but AI is very convenient to this kind of narrative for a ton of reasons. But I also think as Boomers are aging out and starting to get sick and die they are increasingly trying to push the cinematic techno utopias they grew up on into reality regardless of the current technology. This is the sense in which you get incongruities like Elon promises a global taxi rollout yearly for a decade, the 10000th tech demo of some plastic man doing a flip gets reported but you never interact with a robot or chatbots are constantly touted as problem solvers and knowledge workers without any in depth cases of this advantage being reported or explored. I also think that people today have become a little disenchanted with the idea of rational solutions and progress, the same issues and technologies have been circulating in the discourse for too long without change and more and more of the idea of humanity changing is being pushed onto the vague notion of a superintelligence that will just take the wheel for us and do everything.
