look into the animal realm, it's basically the same thing, the male has to perform a quirky mating dance for the female, he basically has to put on a show, to play the entertainer. if the female deems the show entertaining enough, she will allow mating to happen, otherwise not.

as with many things, especially when it comes to gender roles, mating and instinctual interactions between the two sexes, we're not much different from the animal realm.
