Having Mike trip or slip on something during the race would have had the same effect. Just make it so whatever tripped him wasn't too obvious and then have him and have the race stop so Paulo goes and checks on Mike. Everyone involved realizes it is fucking dumb and may be they can have a double group "date" to smooth this over. Daisy and Paulo get to hang out & Mike gets his new friend. It's a better background for Paisy to start then Lucy.
