Go watch some videos on Youtube in which they test stands of different designs to get a feeling of what to avoid and how they usually fail. Most 2-3 ton jack stands are just rebrands of the same few models. I personally prefer axle stands with 4 legs and a safety pin that look like this (not this exact brand).
