Not really, the first secret character wasn't playable until the second game. So I'll give you this, SF created the idea that a secret character could be unlocked with Akuma, and MK copied that with MKIII, but MK invented the secret character to begin with.

Nah, MK is cool and literally every red blooded (non sheltered) American (not from the west or east coast) was obsessed with it as a kid as they were TMNT or Batman/X-Men/Spider-Man. If you're not from the USA you won't get it, you didn't have the combination of things that made up MK's appeal be popular in your country because that country is Japan.
MK was always inferior as a competitive game to SF, to this day I play more SF when I really want to game, but absolutely nothing least of all foreigners who eat rice instead of potatoes, is gonna change my mind that MK isn't fucking rad, and in some ways way more interesting than any other fighting game, because it's lore isn't fucking ass
It also seems to really burn you up that yes, Chinese media was way more popular to us in the 90s than Japanese, which only grew by the late 90s. All you had was The Karate Kid and ninjas, but the idea of ninjas we liked were from Chinese and American movies, and Japan apparently liked it too since they ran with it and made shit like Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi that is purely, the ninja created by this fiction
