The population in China actually increased during this time, but it didn't increase as much as "expected", so they took that difference and claimed all of those deaths were "death from communism/starvation".

There's not even eye-witness accounts outside of confirming that yeah, someone somewhere in China suffered malnutrition at that time, but it wasn't widespread

The Great Leap Forward has wild death estimates ranging from 5 million to 70 million, commonly around 45 million (like an entire WW2, westerners seriously believe this shit)
