FE1/11, 2, 3/12, 4, 5 and 13 all happen in the same world, but in different times and places.
FE6 and 7 are their own unique setting.
As are 9 and 10.
All the others are self-contained. Some of the later games have passing references to an extended multiverse that links all the various worlds together with different timelines and shit, but it's not important at all and just more of a way to justify certain gameplay decisions.
Here's your best options for beginning points:
>FE7 (GBA) - Easy to pick up and learn. Pretty in-depth tutorial that'll drill the core series gameplay concepts into your head and gives you 10 chapters as a playground of sorts where you can fuck up without long-lasting consequences. The unlockable hardest difficulty can also provide you with a decent and fulfilling challenge if you want to test yourself. The story is nothing spectacular but it has its moments.
>FE8 (GBA) - Also very easy to pick up. A mostly breezy game, without really any bad units and that gives you access to an easily exploitable map for grinding, but still fun, and has one or two gut punch chapters to prevent you from getting super-comfortable. The story has some intrigue and you have a route split that changes some aspects of it.
>FE13 (3DS) - The series' revival hit. Easy to pick up but has a bit more nuance. There are various ways to break the game sideways if you know what you're doing. Also has bullshit unfun difficulty options if you're into that. Also probably the first game with dating sim-ish elements, as you have an Avatar character who can marry anyone in the cast. The story is boring and predictable but the cast is likeable enough.
>FE16 (Switch) - Not the most intuitive but gives you a lot of unit customization and four different route splits. Also currently the most popular FE, if you want to join the bandwagon. The story is either decent or dogshit depending on who you ask. Has a musou spin-off that gives an alternate-ish take on the story.
