In Cyberpunk, what happened was "Rabids" (who are effectively a more malicious version of the LLMs we have now, and with proper jailbreaking can easily end up this way socially, alongside having means of fucking with whatever's connected to the internet) flooded the internet courtesy of an asshole by the name of Rache Bartmoss (You can find his corpse in Cyberpunk 2077) in an event now known as the "DataKrash" and the ensuing internet after it is a separate series of networks with a pseudo-physical "cyberspace" that, due to how internet connections work in the setting (Technically even microwaves are part of "The Net"), basically feature a cordoned off nightmare shitpit called the "Old Net" separated from the rest of the internet by the Blackwall.
ANd of course, there are retarded brown people in the setting known as Maelstrom who worship RABIDS and call them Daemons and actively try to summon them into the rest of the internet. In 2077 you can even find a "Smart Gun" that is literally possessed by one of these RABIDS.
