I actually love that concept, and it would have been interesting. I dunno why Oda is so insistent on Luffy rejecting the idea of having a huge crew. Roger and Shanks both have huge crews of fodder anyway. Remember during Long Ring Long Land, after the Straw Hats won the Davy Back Game? Instead of Luffy rejecting literally every Foxy crew member, have him pick out a guy or two who looks cool and/or strong, and then they'd become permanent background characters.
