when i was in my teens i was fine with this.. i had a 'we are stardust' sagan type appreciation for life.. but even that was premised upon hope and the presumption of some kind of deep fulfillment by achieving my goals. but that is not really the case..
something happens to people, especially men around the age of 30 where they just wonder 'is this really all there is to my life? just doing the same things and engaging with a career that has questionable beneficial qualities to mankind? buying things i am too tired to use? what is the point of all of this?'

i suppose you go from an intellectual understanding to an emotional understanding of the concept of the struggle of mankind. everything our species will do will be forgotten at some point.. eventually it will be as if we never existed at all. this is our ultimate fate as as species. total oblivion. not even a memory.
