‘They Left Him’: Russian Soldier Wounded on First Mission Declared Missing, Friend Says Commanders Forbid Search

A Russian contract soldier was wounded and abandoned on the battlefield in Ukraine during his first combat mission, which came after just two weeks of military training, according to a video appeal posted by a friend of the soldier. The man's commanders have since reportedly declared him missing, refused to send an evacuation team, and forbidden his comrades from using their own drones to locate him.
In the video, the man identifies his friend as Yury Sergeyevich Belov, born in 2002, with the call sign “Bely.” Belov reportedly signed a contract with the Ministry of Defense in April 2025 and was assigned to the 144th Motorized Rifle Brigade (military unit 11739). After a brief two-week training period, he was deployed to Ukraine.
"I don't know what they could have possibly taught him in two weeks, to be honest," his friend says in the recording. "On his very first combat mission, he was wounded."
According to the friend, Belov was struck in the back by an FPV drone. His comrades presumed he was killed. As shelling intensified, the unit retreated, leaving Belov’s body behind.
The official response, the friend claims, has been a bureaucratic nightmare. "The commanders claim that he died and is declared missing in action. They aren't sending an evacuation group there because of the constant shelling," he says, adding a detail that suggests a cover-up or gross negligence. "Also, according to his fellow soldiers, they are forbidden from launching their own drones," which could potentially be used to find Belov.
The family is now left without answers, hoping the public appeal will help them discover the fate of their son.
