You aren’t supposed to know this but I’ll tell you anyway. The obelisks are a symbolic marker for an underground cavern system that only the elite can access.
If you walk up to an obelisk and press a pattern of stones in a certain order the stone face wall opens up like in Harry Potter in diagon alley revealing a big staircase that you can go down.
