It's been used for all sorts or roles, from anti-armor/aircraft to shooting infantry (or by some hunters for big animals). However, 50 cal isn't designed for soft tissue terminal performance. It usually goes through the target, without significantly dumping energy. It kills because it's still 50 cal but doesn't really use all of its energy.
