Might be for a fire alarm if it's near the kitchen. If one goes off, they all go off, and if you have the kind that's super sensitive it gets real fucking old, real fucking quick.
Could still just unplug it, take the battery out, and put it back though. Or get the other type for use in/near a kitchen.
