Amal Clooney is a British lawyer specializing in international human rights. She has practiced law at international courts in The Hague, including the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. She worked at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York City for three years as part of the Criminal Defense and Investigations Group. Clooney completed a judicial clerkship at the International Court of Justice in 2004. She was also a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader.

Her father Ramzi Alamuddin is a scion of the Alam al-Din dynasty. The Alam al-Din dynasty is a Druze family which intermittently held or contested for the paramount chieftainship of the Druze districts of Mount Lebanon in the late 17th and early 18th centuries during Ottoman rule. During this period, they were often in competition with Ma'n and Shihab dynasties for these privileged positions. After losing the Shihabs and the Qays at the Battle of Ain Dara in 1711, the surviving members of the family relocated to Baaqlin in the Chouf, while others settled in Hasbaya in Wadi al-Taym and Suwayda in the Hauran.

Amal Clooney married the actor George Clooney, who himself is a Council on Foreign Relations member.
