It was a war and mexico lost. The ceded half the country because it was better than being conquered outright.

Mexico relinquished its claims on Texas and accepted the Rio Grande as its northern border with the United States.

This is a long settled matter and only chicanos in the US with more pride for the country they fled make this argument.
