>is there any advantage to using the sponge on a round area versus just holding a high grit sand paper in my hands and letting my finger conform it to the area im sanding? or it the sponge just superior for some reason?

I'd say it's not required, nothing is. These are just tools that help provide a cleaner finish. Sponges hold water for wet-sanding way better. Wet-sanding provides a cleaner finish, however there is also the added benefit of -some- rigidity from the thickness of the sponge which I find makes the sanding job easier. I don't disagree with >>23331293, but you can get a good finish with just sandpaper and a finger you just need to be careful.

>going from cut sprue to finishing/polishing sponge/ stick/ sandpaper how many grits would i need? 3? 5? 10? im not sure what im gettng into here. id be interested in
>A. a finishing grit that makes it perfectly match the plastic
>B. a finshing grit that gets it close enough, that with a top coat of matte or gloss>matte the finish is hidden like a decal.

Lets address both A. & B. If you're going for a finish like you describe in A. you'll already have the tools you need for B. When trying to get a near perfect finish (especially when planning on a gloss goat which magnifies errors), you'll want pretty much every grit. Sanding in steps as you go up the grit-scale helps you get a more polished end result. If you're interested in sponges, google "GodHand Kamiyasu Special Assortment Set GH-KS-SP". This is a great starter kit with all the grits and differnet sizes you'll need (or try to find something like it if you dont want to pay godhand premium). 120 grit to 10,000 grit in 2mm, 3mm and 5mm thickness. The different thickness depends on how round the part is as that affects how much bend the sponge has around the part. Most adhesive sand paper sets for sanding sticks are usually around 400-2000.
